Because my 11-year-old is a prime contender for fanfiction, spending basically every waking minute creating spinoffs of his favorite books and video games, I’m intrigued by fanfiction website AO3. But I wasn’t sure if it’s safe for kids, so I did a deep dive. AO3 can be a great creative outlet for kids, but explicit content on the platform and contact with strangers are cause for concern. Here’s what I found.
What is AO3?
Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a popular fanfiction forum where users can read and publish stories based on characters, settings, and plots from existing works.
Benefits of AO3 for kids
Creative outlet. Writing fanfiction is a great creative outlet for kids, particularly if they really resonate with a character.
Deep dive into their favorite fictional worlds. There’s a particular kind of kid (I’m raising one) who, when they invest in a fictional world, goes all in. Fanfiction allows kids to stay inside this world after they close the book, blow through the series, or their mom makes them power down the Switch.
Community. Fanfiction helps kids find community around something they love. The offerings on AO3 are vast. If your kid is into an existing book, movie, or show, it’s probably there.
Risks of AO3 for kids
Explicit content and mature themes. AO3 hosts stories with adult themes, including explicit sexual content and violence. (It can get pretty wild.)
Unhealthy relationship dynamics. Some stories glorify unhealthy, abusive relationships, such as those categorized as “dark romance.”
Contact with strangers. There’s no direct messaging on AO3, but there’s still a comment section, and users can send each other work and invite collaboration. A predator would have to lure your child to another platform with DMs, though, so the grooming risk is low.
Does AO3 have parental controls?
AO3 doesn’t have parental controls, but there are features that increase safety:
Waiting period to create an account
To create an account, you have to request an invitation and go through a waiting period. This is due to backend capacity, but there’s a secondary safety benefit: if you use BrightCanary, you can find out before they create an account and either put the kibosh on it or help them use the platform safely from the jump.
Default settings lean toward safety
Your child is protected right away with strong default settings.
No surprise adult content. Unless users opt in, AO3 won’t display adult content without first alerting the user and confirming they want to proceed.
Content warnings. Content warnings are displayed unless a user opts out.
No unsolicited co-creator invites. Users must opt in to allow invitations to co-create work, creating a default barrier from stranger interactions.
No unsolicited gifts. Fanworks created on AO3 can be dedicated to a specific user (called a “gift”). This is a prime grooming opportunity, so I love that it’s opt-in only.
Filters
You can filter content on AO3, although the process is a bit clunky. Two notable filters to use for kid safety:
Teen And Up Audiences. You can opt to exclude anything rated for teens and older.
Custom Tags. You can choose to exclude specific tags like violence or smut.
Does AO3 have age verification?
Users must attest that they’re at least 13 years old, but there’s no age-verification process.
How to decide if AO3 is okay for your child
It depends on your child’s maturity level. There aren’t huge safety risks like stranger danger; the biggest issue is exposure to adult content. For mature kids who can be trusted to use the included safety features and filters, the platform can be used relatively safely.
How to help your child use AO3 safely
If you let your child use AO3, here are some ways to increase their safety on the platform:
Wait until 13. Even if your 10-year-old is a Percy Jackson fanfic prodigy, it’s best to be on the safe side and wait until the platform minimum.
Talk to them about the range of content they might see. Make sure they’re aware of what they might come across and why this content isn’t appropriate for them.
Emphasize the importance of not changing the default safety settings. Because the safety settings aren’t parental controls, your child can change them at any time. Explain why the default settings are there to protect them and shouldn’t be changed.
Coach them on how to deal with strangers in the comments section. Make sure your kid feels empowered to ignore and block anyone causing shenanigans in the comments section.
Monitor their use. Especially when your child first joins AO3, keep an eye on the material they’re consuming and producing. Two ways to do this:
View their history. Sit with them while they’re logged in and view their history to see what they’re reading on the platform.
Use BrightCanary. BrightCanary monitors everything your child types on all platforms and sends you alerts to anything concerning. If they search for something sketchy on AO3, you’ll hear about it.
Final word
AO3 can be safe for kids, provided the available guardrails are used. The popular fanfic site has many benefits for kids, like a creative outlet, community, and the chance to deep dive on their favorite stories, but it also hosts explicit content and lacks parental controls. It’s wise to wait until your child is 13 (the minimum age set by the platform), talk openly about what they might encounter, keep default safety settings on, and monitor their use, especially early on.
