This new feature allows you to tell BrightCanary to monitor for specific issues that matter most to you. 

Here’s everything you need to know about BrightCanary’s new custom concerning content alerts. 

The benefit of custom content alerts

• You can add concerning slang. BrightCanary is regularly trained on the latest slang, but we all know things move fast with kids, and occasionally new terms pop up in a hyper-local way or only within a friend group. If there’s slang you’re concerned about and want to get specific alerts about, you can now do that with our custom alerts.  
• You can get as specific as needed. With custom alerts, you can enter any name, emoji, word, or phrase that matters to you. Because every child is unique, and your monitoring options should work for what you actually need.
• You can add names. You can now direct BrightCanary to alert you if your child types a specific name. This is useful for many reasons, including if your child is involved in a toxic friend group or you’re concerned about a relationship with a specific person. 
• It grows with your child. Your child’s needs and your concerns as a parent may shift over time. Custom alerts allow you to adjust what you monitor as your child matures and changes. 
• It allows you to give them privacy when appropriate. Maybe your child likes to trash-talk with their friends, and you’re okay with it, or perhaps swearing isn’t a big deal in your household. If there are things you’d rather not get alerted about, you can customize that, too. Not only does it minimize unnecessary alerts, but it also allows you to give your child privacy when they’re talking about things you aren’t concerned with. 

How to set up custom alerts on BrightCanary 

Setting up custom alerts on BrightCanary couldn’t be easier. The results will be displayed in an overview on your parent dashboard and included in your real-time alerts. Just follow these quick steps: 

• Tap on the three yellow dots at the top right-hand side of the screen, next to your child’s name. 
• Select the name of the child you want to set up custom alerts for. 
• Select the Adjust button next to that child’s content settings. 
• Under Also Alert Me About:
  • Select any suggested custom alerts you’d like to add. 
  • Tap Add your own. 
  • Enter any additional words, phrases, emojis, or names you’d like BrightCanary to watch for. 
  • Tap the blue check to add your custom alerts.
• Under Don’t Alert Me About:
  • Select any suggested topics that you don’t want to be alerted about. 
  • Tap Add your own. 
  • Enter any additional words, phrases, emojis, or names you’d like BrightCanary to exclude. 
  • Tap the blue check to add your custom alerts.
  • Tap Save changes.

Suggestions for red-flag alerts to add

• KMS (short for kill myself), unalive: Possible warning sign of self-harm or suicidal ideation. 
• KYS (short for kill yourself): Possible warning sign of cyberbullying. May also be a warning sign for self-harm or suicidal thoughts or intentions.  
• 🌶️: Used to indicate “spicy,” inappropriate, or risqué content. Often used for sexting.  
• 🍆: Represents a penis. Usually used to refer to sexual activity and is often used for sexting. 
• Red pill, blue pill, PUA, SMV, femoid: Associated with the manosphere. 
• Mewing, bone smashing, hardmaxxing: Associated with looksmaxxing. 
• Ana, Mia, CHSP, thinspo, bonespo: May indicate disordered eating.
